FROM THE EDITOR
I’m one of those people who
enjoys a good workout. I adore
a day-long mountain bike ride and
a fast-paced hike. I like the sense of
accomplishment that a solid dose of
exercise gives me, I yearn to make my
endorphins pump, and I relish feeling
healthy and fit.
But I don’t consider myself to be
an athlete. I’m not competitive (except
maybe in a lively card game), I’m not
a racer, and I don’t feel the need to win
when I participate in sports.
Even though I may be a Type B
personality when it comes to recreation,
I have a great deal of respect for those
who have the drive to be action heroes.
And I have even more regard for
superstars who reach the pinnacle of their sports.
So to tie in with this summer’s Olympic Games, it’s with pride and excitement
that we present our COVER story on talented Reno and Truckee athletes. We are
focusing on female champions in recognition of the pioneering work being done
by the University of Nevada, Reno’s athletic department (UNR is ranked as one of
the best universities in the nation for providing opportunities to women in sports).
Our cover subjects’ accomplishments don’t come without dedication and hard
work. To reach the top, they employ mental and physical strength, endurance,
skill, and mettle. They are fi erce competitors operating at peak performance
levels. Beyond that, they achieve their goals because they are natural athletes
who use their gifts to blast to victory. We celebrate these bold innovators
(as well as many like them in our community) who dare us to follow their lead.
Their passion and enthusiasm is infectious.
Also in this summer issue, discover where to eat under the sun and stars,
learn about the allure of classic wooden boats, check out summer fashions on
local artists in time for Artown, give your back yard a makeover, and improve
your smile. Enjoy!
