Wells Ave. 323-6366 For Reno locals, if it’s Sunday, it must be PJ’s — for some of the best omelets, eggs Benedict and huevos rancheros in town. PJ’s also serves lunch sandwiches and burgers, and dinner ribs and fajitas. There’s a full bar to satisfy that mimosa or bloody Mary craving — at brunch and beyond. WILD RIVER GRILLE L, D $$ 17 S. Virginia St. 284-7455 Enjoy lunch or dinner along the Truckee River at this pretty, welcoming spot. Lunch includes items such as marinated salmon and crab cakes, meat and seafood as either a sandwich or salad, and pasta pomodoro, and fish and chips. Dinner brings filet mignon, citrus duck and delicious meatloaf. Great happy hour specials. CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN 4TH ST. BISTRO D $$$$ 3065 W. Fourth St. 323-3200 Take that someone special to 4th Street Bistro. The food is upscale California cuisine (with French touches). Ingredients are organic, sustainable, and locally sourced. Chef and co-owner Nathalie Sellers is a leader in supporting local farmers. One of the town’s best wine lists. A tiny enclosed garden beckons in warm weather. Closed Sundays and Mondays. LULOU’S RESTAURANT D $$$$ 1470 S. Virginia St. 329-9979 This sleek, stylish spot still excels 10 years after its 1999 debut. Seasonal dishes with international accents that range from South America to the Middle East to Asia. The service at LuLou’s is extremely knowledgeable and polished. The lounge is perfect for cocktails and sharing appetizers. Not a place to bring children. ROUNDABOUT MARKET & BISTRO B (Sundays), L, D $$ 7665 Town Square Way (Somersett) 747-2090 The Market offers a casual sandwich, burger, and pizza bar (so bring the kids). The Bistro’s dining room features the seasonal, modern American (but approachable) food of chef-owner Colin Smith. Think cream of asparagus soup with shrimp-asparagus brochette, warm lobster salad with melon and radishes, pappardelle tossed with fresh morel mushrooms, seared sea scallops, and brined pork tenderloin. Open Sundays for brunch. SEZMU D $$$ 670 Mount Rose St. 327-4448 Chef-owner Larry Dunning sends out inventive, seasonal dishes in this small (about 40-seat), minimalist spot set in a leafy southwest Reno neighborhood. The wine list is extremely well edited and offers bottles you won’t find elsewhere in town. The artisan cocktails from the bar also are excellent. Three-course Sunday suppers are a great deal at $25. Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. ASIAN/INDIAN FRANCIS’ ASIAN BISTRO L, D $$ 4796 Caughlin Parkway, Suite 101 827-3111 For a mouthwatering tour of Asia, you only have to travel as far as Caughlin Ranch. Francis’ offers the best à la carte sushi in town, delectable noodle dishes, and spicy seafood dishes fresh from the wok. Enjoy the roomy bar and a warm-weather deck overlooking the city. INDIA KABOB L, D $$ 1091 S. Virginia St. 348-6222 Delectable Indian fare, including curries, samosas, vindaloos, and tandoori dishes. Full bar, plus an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet (a la carte also available). JAZMINE L, D $$ 9333 Double R Blvd., Suite 1000 851-2888 Step inside this beautifully decorated restaurant and prepare yourself for delicious Asian dishes. You’ll find standards such as kung pao and chow mein as well as Szechuan lamb, red snapper with mushrooms, and New York steak with XO sauce. There’s fresh sushi, too. Closed Sundays. KYOTO L, D $$ 915 W. Moana Lane 825-9686 From tempura to teriyaki, you’ll find all your favorite Japanese dishes at Kyoto. And if you like sushi, you’ll love it here. Closed Sundays. PEONY L, D $$$ 6430 Mae Anne Ave. 747-3288 Peony features classic Chinese dishes and all-you-can-eat sushi in an upscale environment. The restaurant has a full bar and plasma televisions. Open every day for lunch and dinner. BAKERY FRANZ’S BACKSTUBE AUSTRIAN CAFÉ B, L $ 3882 Mayberry Landing 624-2921 This bakery features sumptuous pastries and also has sandwiches, filled croissants, pastries, coffees, cakes, and cookies. Closed on Mondays. DELI/SANDWICHES/SALADS/BARBECUE THE BBQ HOUSE L, D $$ 463 Roberts St. 323-7427 If you’re a fan of barbecued brisket, ribs, hot links, or chicken, try them “Oakland-style” at the BBQ House. Oakland-style means apple, cherry, and almond woods are used, and the sauce (as hot — or not — as you like) relies on brown sugar rather than vinegar or molasses. CAFÉ MUSÉE L $$ 160 Liberty St. (Nevada Museum of Art) 329-3323 Find a selection of delectable salads, cold and grilled sandwiches, house-made soups, and daily specials. There’s also a kids’ menu. The third Sunday of every month also offers an exciting jazz brunch. Closed Mondays. COUNTRY GARDEN RESTAURANT B (weekends only), L $$ 606 W. Plumb Lane 825-0213 Eat with the ladies who lunch at this quaint spot in the Arlington Gardens mini-mall. Weekend brunch features eggs Benedict, quiche, muffins, and high tea. Weekday lunch features salads and sandwiches, including a popular French dip. As a bonus, a percentage of the restaurant’s proceeds benefits the Junior League of Reno, a women’s volunteer group. DAUGHTERS CAFÉ B, L $$ 97 Bells St. 324-3447 You’ll find interesting, seasonal menu items nestled inside the cozy, historical home that is Daughters Café. Savory breakfast selections might include a goat cheese, green apple, and walnut omelet; shirred eggs; and beignets. Lunch might bring a spicy chickpea and roasted squash sandwich and a poached egg, mushroom, salmon vinaigrette salad. Closed Mondays. DISH CAFÉ B, L $$ 855 Mill St. 348-8264 Dish features from-scratch quiche, soup, sandwiches, and desserts (including mouthwatering cupcakes). All food is made with a fresh, homemade flair. A nice coffee selection and a friendly staff make this a highlight on the dining and catering scene. Closed on weekends. DOWNTOWN MARKETPLACE DELI B, L $ 138 West St., B-1 348-8862 Try fresh breakfast sandwiches or burritos (stuffed with omelets) or paninis and savory sandwiches (such as grilled chicken, Italian, or vegetarian) for lunch. Salads and hot menu items also are offered. You’ll find a quaint espresso bar and a small, full-service market inside the space as well. FREEMAN’S NATURAL HOT DOGS L, D $ 106 California Ave. 322-3434 Get in line for a double beef dog or a vegan sausage at this hot dog establishment that specializes in organic and natural ingredients. Closed Sundays for lunch and open for dinner Thursday through Sunday. MASSIMO’S FINE ITALIAN DELI L $$ 921 W. Moana Lane (Moana West Annex) 827-3860 If you’re in the mood for a real Italian sandwich, try Massimo’s. That’s where you’ll find all the Italian meats you can handle (including mortadella, Genoa salami, prosciutto, and Italian roast beef) as well as delicious vegetarian options (the fresh mozzarella, tomato, and basil sandwich is to die for). Make sure to have your sandwich made on house-made focaccia. Salads and special entrees (such as lasagna and eggplant parmesan) also are available. PORKY’S B (weekends), L, D $ 3372 S. McCarran Blvd. 825-3777 This restaurant offers delicious barbecue, house-made soup, and Mexican cuisine as well as satisfying salads and sandwiches. There are nightly all-you-can-eat specials and breakfast on the weekends. This locals’ spot includes a friendly bar scene as well. RUBICON DELI L $ 445 California Ave. 322-9792 For gigantic and delicious sandwiches, try this deli (formerly in Tahoe City, Calif.). You’ll find great service, fresh taste, and the highest quality ingredients at this spot, not to mention freshly baked bread with choices such as blue cheese, jalapeño, garlic cheese, and pesto. Closed Sundays. SCRUPLES BAR AND GRILL B, L, D $ 91 W. Plumb Lane 322-7171 Cheap eats, great service, and good quality bar food is what you’ll enjoy at this longtime locals’ spot. Favorites are the chicken wings in a whole slew of sauces and rubs, burgers, nachos, salads, sandwiches, chicken-fried steak, and bloody Marys. There is indoor and outdoor dining, live music on the patio in the summer, and big-screen televisions for watching sports. In addition, Scruples runs a free shuttle service to and from the University of Nevada, Reno basketball and football games. Food is offered around the clock at this spot. SÜP L, D $ 719 S. Virginia St. 324-4787 This soup, salad, and sandwich spot is extremely popular with the lunch crowd. Try the tasty flat iron steak salad or pesto turkey sandwich. Six fresh soups are offered daily and there are many from which to choose. Closed Sundays. THE CHEESE BOARD AMERICAN BISTRO L $$ 247 California Ave. 323-3115 Delicious, California-fresh sandwiches, salads, and soups are served at this popular lunch spot (in business since 1981). It also offers a plentiful wine selection. Closed Sundays. TRUCKEE BAGEL CO. B, L $ 18130 Wedge Parkway 851-8855 You’ll find the best bagels in town at Truckee Bagel Co. They are baked fresh daily and come in many flavors, including blueberry, onion, spinach asiago, three-seed, and whole wheat. Pair your bagel with eggs, bacon, sausage, and more for breakfast or, for lunch, use one as part of a cold or hot sandwich (veggie, turkey, and pastrami are some choices). VOILA CAFÉ AND CATERING B, L $$ 522 California Ave. 324-0228 Healthy salads and sandwiches punctuate the lunch menu at this café. Afternoon diners also will find wraps, crab burgers, grilled chicken breast, and Asian noodle bowls. Breakfast/brunch, served Thursday through Sunday, includes delicious frittatas, breakfast tostatas, eggs Benedict, French toast, and quiche. Closed Mondays. WHOLE FOODS MARKET B, L, D $$ 6139 S. Virginia St. 852-8023 This supermarket has an abundance of prepared food choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The huge salad bar allows busy shoppers to create their own green masterpieces. There are tons of sandwiches and ready-made dishes. Even the sushi gets rave reviews. Bonus: in the summer you can enjoy your meal on a pretty patio that is shaded by a trellis and cooled down with misters. FRENCH BEAUJOLAIS BISTRO L, D $$$ 130 West St. 323-2227 Beaujolais Bistro is trés chic. Owner/chef Bill Gilbert is as much a Reno landmark as the 100-year-old building that houses his delightful little restaurant. For lunch, enjoy soup, salad, quiche, open-faced sandwiches, and more. Dinner brings French favorites such as coq au vin, beef Bourguignon, and cassoulet, as well as beautifully presented American standards such as New York steak. Closed Mondays and no lunch on weekends. ITALIAN BRISCOLA D $$$ 2500 E. Second St. (inside Grand Sierra) 789-2587 The third restaurant opened by celebrated chef Charlie Palmer in Grand Sierra Resort and Casino. The modern Italian menu features house-made antipasti (including charcuterie), freshly made pastas (must trys: braised lamb ravioli and agnolotti graced with shaved truffles), and meat and fish dishes. The front dining room features a private party nook. LA FAMIGLIA D $$ 180 E. First St. 324-1414 This downtown Italian spot is excellent. House-made pastas such as gnocchi, lasagna, and cannelloni are king. There’s a full range of dishes, including seafood, meat, chicken, and vegetarian fare. Closed Sundays. LA STRADA D $$$ 345 N. Virginia St. (inside Eldorado Hotel Casino) 786-5700 The Eldorado’s owners, the Carano clan, are Italian, and this is their flagship restaurant. Many say it’s the best Italian in Northern Nevada. The menu from chef Ivano Centemeri, native-born Italian, mixes pasta, meat, and seafood dishes from northern Italy. Pasta is made fresh daily in the Eldorado’s pasta shop. JOHNNY’S RISTORANTE ITALIANO D $$$ 4245 W. Fourth St. 747-4511 A west Reno dinner house for decades, Johnny’s features Italian-American cuisine, including veal, beef, and seafood dishes, and lots of pasta. Closed Sundays and Mondays. MARIO’S PORTOFINO L, D $$$ 1505 S. Virginia St. 825-7779 This locals’ favorite restaurant features a vast selection of Italian dishes, from mushroom polenta to linguine and clams. Dishes also feature veal, pork, chicken, beef, seafood, and even lamb. A full bar and nice wine list rounds out the offerings. MEXICAN BERTHA MIRANDA’S MEXICAN RESTAURANT B, L, D $$ 336 Mill St. 786-9697 Bertha Miranda’s serves Mexican fare in a comfortable, airy setting reminiscent of a sunny hacienda. South-of-the-border specialties include enchiladas, fajitas, and great Mexican-style breakfasts. Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. BETO’S L, D $ 575 W. Fifth St. 324-0632 You’ll find value-priced lunch combination platters and good carnitas. EL ADOBE CAFÉ B, L, D $$ 55 W. Arroyo St. 327-4422 This establishment serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, including huevos rancheros, chiles rellenos, tamales, tacos, mole, and shrimp fajitas. PUBS AMENDMENT 21 L, D $$ 425 S. Virginia St. 348-6370 Amendment 21 offers a full bar, wine list, salads, pasta, fajitas, burgers, and more. It also broadcasts many sports events and has pool tables, darts, and Xbox games. BREW BROTHERS MICROBREWERY L, D $$ 345 N. Virginia St. (inside Eldorado Hotel Casino) 786-5700 This award-winning microbrewery offers blues and/or rock music nightly and eight custom microbrews. Enjoy wood-fired pizzas and house-made pastas, soups, salads, and sandwiches as well as ribs, steaks, chicken, and fish. SILVER PEAK RESTAURANT AND BREWERY L, D $$ 124 Wonder St. 324-1864 SILVER PEAK GRILL AND TAPROOM L, D $$ 135 N. Sierra St. 284-3300 Silver Peak brews its own ales and lagers. The menu includes pizzas, seafood, salads, and pasta dishes. Both locations are popular gathering places at night. Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. SEAFOOD FIN FISH D $$$ 2500 E. Second St. (inside Grand Sierra) 789-2456 Next door to Charlie Palmer Steak is Fin Fish, Palmer’s sleek seafood restaurant that features a raw bar and seafood specialties. RAPSCALLION SEAFOOD HOUSE & BAR L, D $$$ 1555 S. Wells Ave. 323-1211 Rapscallion offers a menu that changes daily and at least 20 varieties of seafood, plus Certified Angus Beef. Seafood is flown in daily. Also featured are up to seven kinds of fresh oysters daily. Don’t miss Sunday brunch. Closed for lunch on Saturdays. STEAKHOUSE BIMINI D $$$$ 2707 S Virginia St. (inside the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino) 826-2121 Rich koa wood and tropical seascapes form the backdrop for Bimini’s small plates, seafood, and meat and poultry issuing from cherry-and-oak burning grills. Beef is Certified Angus Beef, wet aged at least 28 days. The images of ocean life are stunning. Splash! CHARLIE PALMER STEAK D $$$$ 2500 E. Second St. (inside Grand Sierra) 789-2456 Fine dining hit its stride when Charlie Palmer opened his swanky, upscale steak house in the summer of 2007. Patrons find delicious steaks and an expansive wine list here. HARRAH’S STEAK HOUSE L, D $$$$ 219 N. Center St. (inside Harrah’s Reno) 788-2929 A perennial “Best of” vote-getter, this restaurant has steaks of all sizes and cuts on the menu, along with pastas, salads, and seafood. The garlic-rich Caesar salad and savory steak Diane are tasty choices. No lunch on weekends. WASHOE L, D $$$ 4201 W. Fourth St. 786-1323 This fine-dining restaurant features a full variety of steak cuts and sizes, plus fresh seafood dishes, pastas, and salads. And there’s a beautiful patio. No lunch on weekends. SUSHI SUSHI CLUB L, D $$$ 294 E. Moana Lane 828-7311 A definite hot spot for cool sushi, this restaurant features all-you-can-eat and a la carte items. It’s well-known for its array of long-roll choices and its popular Godzilla roll. SUSHI PIER I L, D $$$ 1290 E. Plumb Lane 825-6776 SUSHI PIER II L, D $$$ 1507 S. Virginia St. 825-5225 Fresh options abound for both all-you-can-eat lunch and dinner, plus there’s tempura. The chefs are creative, offering different styles and dishes, including a signature Sushi Pier long roll. THAI BANGKOK CUISINE L, D $$ 55 Mount Rose St. 322-0299 6170 Mae Anne Ave., Suite 5 747-9999 5851 S. Virginia St. 284-3802 Serving authentic Thai cuisine as mild or wild as you want it, this Reno favorite has an exhaustive menu of curries, soups, pad Thai, and vegetarian dishes. Closed on Sundays. CAFÉ DE THAI L, D $$$ 7499 Longley Lane 829-8424 This longtime Reno spot serves sophisticated Thai cuisine with a modern twist. Stir-fry and curry options abound. No lunch on Sundays. VIETNAMESE ASIAN NOODLES L, D $ 1290 E. Plumb Lane 828-7227 Loyal customers favorably compare this Vietnamese/Chinese restaurant to San Francisco establishments. GOLDEN FLOWER VIETNAMESE L, D $ 205 W. Fifth St. 323-1628 Regulars call this place “very good, fresh, and authentic.” It has a large menu, fast service, and offers a good value. PHO L, D $ 6775 Sierra Center Parkway, Suite 600 852-6100 Pho, in the Target shopping center, has a friendly, polished atmosphere and delicious pho. The restaurant has outstanding broth, crisp vegetables, fresh meats, and perfectly cooked noodles. Favorites include the barbecue pork pho, beef pho, and the pot stickers. SAIGON 88 L, D $ 654 N. McCarran Blvd., Sparks 358-9988 Saigon 88 offers everything from mixed beef pho to vegetarian options. This family-owned restaurant presents delicious broth and delightful service. WINE BARS FINE VINES CHEESE AND WINE 6300 Mae Anne Ave., Suite 3 787-6300 Enjoy wine tasting on Thursdays and Fridays, beginning at 5 p.m., and all day on Saturdays. Flights are offered, and discover a large selection of wine sold by the bottle. In addition, the shop sells imported and artisan cheese by the pound and on cheese plates. First St. 329-4484 At this quaint downtown wine bar, you’ll find about 40 wines by the glass and a few bottle selections. The bar also offers a meat-and-cheese plate, pizzas, and sandwiches. Also, Jungle Vino is part of the popular downtown wine walk (on the third Saturday of the month). L’UVA BELLA WINE GALLERY Take a break from shopping at The Summit and sneak into this wine bar, which offers 500 wines by the bottle. There are many special events hosted by the shop, including a wine walk every second Sunday and wine tastings on Thursday nights (complemented during the summer by The Summit’s Thursday concert series). Vintage features state-of-the-art dispensing kiosks that allow customers to try 50 different wines with by-the-ounce pours. Customers also can drink a full glass, and Vintage has many wines at less than $10 and $6 a glass. Complimentary cheese and Truckee sourdough bread is served with each tasting. Closed Sundays. WEST STREET WINE BAR 148 West St. (West Street Market) 336-3560 Customers can enjoy wine by the taste, glass, or bottle at this new downtown spot, which has more than 50 wines by the glass. The business holds at least two winery tastings each month and offers about 10 interesting, premium beers as well. Customers can bring in food from any of West Street Market vendors, and the full lunch and dinner menu from Beaujolais Bistro (next door) is offered. Also, this spot is part of the downtown wine walk that occurs on the third Saturday of the month. WHISPERING VINE WINE CO. 3886 Mayberry Drive, Unit D 787-9463 Reno’s first wine bar offers a vibrant wine-tasting scene.
